What Is An Icon In Graphic Design

graphic icon design

It’s free to download, but accessing the full feature set for commercial use requires a purchase of at least $59.99, though the company often runs sales, so you could pick it up more cheaply. Once you’ve created your icons, download PNG, jpeg or other files for use. The tool is free, but you will be asked to provide your email address in order to download your icons and logos. Venngage’s Icon Maker is free to start, but you will need to create an account to download and use the icons and designs you make.

Pictograms and Ideograms: Elements of Iconic Design

In our previous example, the icon of a cat is a pictogram because it represents the thing in real life (the animal). Someone from the US or Japan would recognize the pictogram since the thing “cat” exists universally. An effective icon is able to extract the most essential visual qualities of a thing or idea in order to make the representation readily recognizable. They communicate with minimal effort, in a universally (or widely accepted) recognizable way.

Ivy League inspired consulting logos

Your clients hire you to help them be more successful… or in some cases, to be successful, period. As a consultant promising this success, build trust with a logo that shows a positive upward trajectory. When you look at consulting logos, one of the first things you’ll notice is that a lot of them make the consultant’s name the primary focus. Some are just the consultant’s name and others are the name accompanied by a small, simple icon. This kind of logo is great for a consultant who works alone or one whose firm is simply named for them. There’s a boutique quality to this kind of logo that makes them feel upscale and exclusive, which is perfect for the consultant who makes personal relationships with their clients a tenet of their brand.

Icon maker FAQ

The term icon is quite broad and essentially refers to a visual element that’s meant to illustrate one or more aspects of a design. They can lean toward the very simplistic with clip art-style design, while they can also be more detailed, as the above examples illustrate. Generate icon sets that are uniformly styled and scaled. For many professional designers, Adobe Illustrator is the gold standard when it comes to creating icons. The software lets users create icons and illustrations from scratch. It’s expensive, and mastering it requires years of training and experience. Icons are versatile visual tools that can be used for a range of things, from company logos to infographics, presentations and other visual communication. Creating your own icons doesn’t necessarily require advanced design skills if you can use an icon maker.

Still, for those who can get past the initial investment, Illustrator’s tools are peerless when it comes to making completely custom icons and illustrations. Draw freehand using the pen tool or combine triangles, squares and circles to build complex shapes. Icon makers are online tools or software that marketers, entrepreneurs and others can utilize to craft custom images and illustrations for their visual communications, branding and more. Choose from 100,000+ shapes, 100+ backgrounds modify colors, shadows and more until your icon is perfect! As humans, we depend on icon design, which is why effective icon design is an essential part of the graphic design profession. Understanding what icons are in graphic design is crucial to the creation of logos, visual identities, and visual information. So we’ve already established that expensive-looking logos, logos that build name recognition and logos that promise success are great logos for consultants.

She's an award-winning practitioner of journalism and information design who spent the better part of a decade as the creative director of a digital marketing shop. As a writer, Jennifer contributes to a variety of publications while working with clients as well as taking on her own projects. Create stunning icons by quickly adjusting size, shape, background, color gradients, shadows and lighting. Note that there is nothing in the “heart” or black and yellow triangles symbol that inherently or intrinsically communicate being in love or nuclear fallout, respectively. By growing in a specific culture, we become accustomed to recognizing these symbols for these purposes. Compared to the cat photo, it is only a very minimal representation of a cat.

The most robust plan is $19.99 per month, or about $180 per year. Icons have become an integral part of the visual identity of brands and organizations. In fact, logo design in many ways is iconic design, since logos have to communicate simply and decisively the essence, attributes, objectives, or feel of a brand. Getting an icon right is an essential skill for any graphic designer. So, if you want to become an effective designer, you need to understand what icons are, their essential elements, and how they communicate. All superhero-saving-the-world imagery aside, if you’re a consultant, you need a logo that communicates that to prospective clients.

Some logos manage to pull off all three by drawing inspiration from the logos used by elite universities. It’s important to remember the difference between looking valuable and looking overpriced. Expensive-looking logos are ideal for consultants who work with clients who spare no expense on business development, like multi-million dollar companies…and businesses that aspire to be multi-million dollar companies.

You rely on your logo to connect with the clients who need you. Are you ready to show them that you know what you’re doing and you’re the one they should trust to lead them to success? Take a look at our designers’ portfolios to find the perfect design consultant for your logo. If you already have a pretty good idea of what you want your logo to look like and now you just need a designer to make it a reality, you can save a ton of time by working directly with a freelance logo designer. Browse designer portfolios to find the one whose work matches your brand best, then get to work together on your perfect logo. A lot of the logos here play up prestige, so if you’re a coach or consultant who wants to go against the grain and really stand out from your peers, take your logo in the opposite direction and have some fun with it.

Create favicons and app icons with Favicon Generator, or download favicon-sized graphics of dozens of icons, shapes and other illustrations. This free tool is a great resource for those who need to create website favicons and app icons, though it’s less useful for graphic designers and marketers. Still, choose from dozens of styles, shapes and symbols to create a unique icon set that’s perfect for your brand’s visual communications. Once you have your icon set created, export PNG or jpeg files ready for use in all your design assets. So before you’re ready to get to work on your logo, you need to figure out exactly who your brand is.

Top 11 Modern Minimalist Dresser Design Ideas of 2024

dresser design

By using solid wood for the face and edging, this dresser will not only look and feel great, but also last longer than particle board substitutes from big box stores. Modern dressers are all about clean lines and minimalism. This type of dresser works well in an industrial-styled home, or in a contemporary new build, or in a converted loft apartment. The benefit of metal furniture is that it is hard-wearing and long-lasting; depending on the type of metal, it is often lightweight yet strong and sturdy.

Different Types of Dressers (Design, Materials, Styles) with Pictures

If you do not own many hanging items, a standard vertical or horizontal dresser is probably suitable for your lifestyle. However, if you require additional storage beyond the closet, an armoire or gentleman's chest is definitely worth purchasing. Small space dwellers may wish to focus on dressers that perform multiple functions, while those furnishing larger rooms have more freedom in terms of the type of dresser to choose. Dressers are typically one of the larger pieces of furniture in a bedroom or living room, and their appearance can significantly impact the room’s overall aesthetic. You can create a harmonious look by opting for a dresser with a design and finish that complements the room’s style. For example, a sleek, modern dresser can enhance the contemporary feel of a room.

Crate & Barrel Ensenada Wood 9-Drawer Dresser

This is usually done by having extra room on the sides of the headboard to make room for drawers. Another, non-traditional way to combine them with the platform of a bed doubling as storage drawers underneath. A common combination is the bed and storage drawers in one.

A grey decorative modern dresser decor set against a shiplap wall exudes an understated elegance. The simplicity of the grey color complements the textured shiplap backdrop, creating a refined yet unassuming aesthetic that can suit various interior styles. Wicker and rattan are woven, which gives it a texture and appearance that is unique to the other types of materials that are used for dressers. This can be made out of different types of plastics, wood, or other natural elements, which can cause a variety in the product’s reliability.

When it comes to dressing your dresser, the possibilities are endless. Start with personal touches like family photos, artwork, or a mirror. Add greenery, like potted plants, to infuse life and vibrancy into your space. Consider functional elements, such as a stylish tray or a catch-all dish for jewelry and keys.

B. Modern

Leather dressers add a softer feel to the space and add a unique texture to the design. Overall it is just a very small vertical chest of drawers, as it is meant to store very small pieces of clothing. When creating these pieces the idea was that there would be seven drawers (one for each day of the week) and you could plan your entire week’s worth of undergarments. This is laid out like a standard type with an additional open section on one side with a rod inside to hang items that could be easily wrinkled.

Modern Patchwork Dresser

Ensure your two side pieces (A) are mirrored rather than identical. Family HandymanAfter cutting the parts, you’ll need to add dados and rabbets to some of the pieces. As for the 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch plywood, I prefer to use apple ply or Baltic birch plywood.

The design features five drawers and I used simple black handles on both that really go with the vibe I was looking for. It’s one of two dressers that go with another bedroom suite I built. The drawers have locks since it was built for the library, but you can leave them out when you build yours. This dual piece of furniture is perfect for small bedrooms, dorm rooms, or guest bedrooms. This size is perfect for a small bedroom, or a guest room, or can even be used as a large nightstand or an entryway table.

These minimalist dressers can create a clean and simple look in your home. The advantage of a minimal dresser is that you can focus on your essentials and eliminate clutter. I like this product because it provides three options such as 5-drawer, 4-drawer, and 3-drawer. This is a nightstand that is made with an attractive and modern style.

The Swannie House

swannie house

The former is primed to serve as the city’s long-awaited connection between its inner and outer harbor, with trees, bike paths and street lighting revamping a 1.4-mile thoroughfare to Fuhrmann Boulevard. And whether architects and planners of the forthcoming boulevard intended to or not, they’ve also positioned the latter – one of Buffalo’s most cherished corner gin mills – to become their riverside project’s unofficial welcome center. She was behind the bar five days earlier, chatting as she served folks from the neighborhood. That night, she kept the bar open late to accommodate a regular who was meeting friends from out of town. There's no record of anyone named Swanerski – or anyone with a name even close – living in or emigrating to Buffalo, ever. But since at least 1866, the Swanney family had been running a boarding house (with a tavern on the ground floor) in the First Ward.

The chili was good and meaty with cheese on top and some hot sauce served on the side. The Swannie House has been a Buffalo staple pretty much forever. It occurs to me that walking through the front door here is as close as I’ll probably ever get to traveling back in time (not that I’m giving up on that dream). You can just imagine what this place was like a 100 years ago when Buffalo was one of the largest seaports in the  world, and the waterfront was alive with hard drinking sailors and dock workers. Today the servers and patrons are much more congenial (I’m sure), down right friendly. Later, he moved nearby, and was another frequenter of Swannie House, along with a cast of characters and working folks from the General Mills plant on the other side of the Buffalo River.

The Swannie House

Combine this kind of seclusion with the tavern’s intimate, wood-paneled interiors and you’ll understand how it’s still standing after so many bars around it have fallen. And such attributes will keep it steady as an unforeseen swarm of development rises around it. If you’re looking for some quality pub food with some atmosphere and a side of history, then the Swannie House is calling your name. Don’t let the rough exterior fool you, someone is working hard in the kitchen. I’d be tempted to go for a late lunch, and let it roll right into happy hour and a Sabres game. “It was a great night of pure Buffalo hospitality,” said Zeisberger.

Write a Review for Swannie House

The late 19th century bar – first called the “Swanerski House” before some Irish-reared editing – is the second oldest in the city (behind the soon-to-be reopened Ulrich’s), with more history in its men’s urinal than most bars have inside four walls. The Tim Wiles-owned tavern has tamed Polish brawls, cashed grain scoopers’ checks and hosted generations of General Mills employees. It’s handled decades of Sabres fans, First Ward residents and Edward M. Cotter fireboat passengers. And its interiors detail the Nickel City’s waterfront history from its heyday to present day.

Guide to Places Perfect for Grabbing a Late Night Bite

Some of the menu items are as classic as the Swannie, with a few Buffalo standards, but they also offer some good looking salads, appetizers, burgers, wraps and entrees. For starters we ordered the house-made chili ($3.95), and beer battered Stuffed Peppers – $7.25. I was a bit nervous about the deep fried banana peppers. Not so, they were nicely battered, with a light crispy shell that seems to hold everything together. Put these babies on the top of the stuffed banana peppers in Buffalo list.

The Fried Bologna was even better and I’ll be back soon for another. The bologna was cut think too, as it should be, piled with grilled onion and cheddar on a nice Costanzo roll. The Mac salad was tasty – clearly house-made with fresh herbs. Another Buffalo staple is the unforgettable smell of Cheerios roasting. The Swannie House is located right next door, across the street from the river by the Michigan street bridge.

The Swannie House on Michigan and Ohio streets has been a popular place for a drink and dinner for locals and those coming downtown for various events like hockey games or concerts. Hanging out on the patio are from left, Vallery E. Marks, Don and Dee Douglas, Carlos Alberto and Cody Douglas, all of Buffalo. For a “dive bar” (meant affectionately) they clearly have someone taking the food/kitchen thing seriously.

The Story

Some of that might not be true, Cichon found; there's no record of anyone named Swanerski – or anyone with a name even close – living in or emigrating to Buffalo, ever. On a recent Tuesday night, I stopped by the Swannie, ordered a Genny Cream stubby ($2.75) and a bag of Cheetos ($1), then settled into a barroom table surrounded by artifacts of Buffalo’s history. Old blue seats from Memorial Auditorium hung above my head, right near a picture of the Sabres’ French Connection and across the bar from a framed photo of Ward boxing legend Jimmy Slattery. Scattered around the front entrance are varsity letters from local high schools like Timon and Frontier; over the doorway leading to the back patio is a retired mile marker for the Shamrock Run. The First Ward's Swannie House is one of Buffalo's oldest gin mills, and recently, the family of the man who started the place began looking for some proper recognition.

Her restaurant career included a server stint at Gabriel’s Gate while she worked toward her dental assistant certificate at the University at Buffalo. Joe Allman, who started working at Swannie House at 16, as a dishwasher, 30 years ago, is now a main bartender, and Swannie House’s longest tenured worker. He said kindness is what people remember about the woman who tried to cure every ail that came her way. I walked under the race placard to find Swannie’s clandestine outdoor seating, covered and surrounded by high wooden fencing and landscaping. Whether on a long lunch or out “running errands,” patrons can hide for a few pops while basking in sweet cereal smells from nearby General Mills.

Walk the other way and you’ll find quick routes to Canalside; the new Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino; and old neighbor Malamute, which is primed to reopen as the craft cocktail-focused Ballyhoo in the fall. But it’s the presumed future of the Swannie House that makes the place even more intriguing. Step outside the bar’s stain-glassed doors one way and you’ll see the possibilities of Ohio Street, with plenty of parcels primed to join nearby River Fest Park and upcoming Freight House Landing apartments off the Buffalo River. The liverwurst was great, cut thick and piled high with fresh, full flavored slices of red onion, on a nice fresh rye bread.

He said that made the news of Wiles-Fetterman’s sudden death so much more shocking. That meant following in the tradition of the owners who came before, standing behind the polished mahogany bar, lining up frosty bottles of Labatts and shots of Crown Royal. But she would also run outside with a bowl of fresh water when customers brought their dogs and parked them outside, Allman said. Often times, such transformation motivates changes within neighboring locales, if only to keep up with the Joneses. But if you walk into the Swannie House, look over their six taps and absorb the ambience, you’ll pray they don’t touch a thing.

Musician Kevin Kukoda started going to Swannie House as a child, brought by his father, along with a gang from the office, for gravy fries, burgers and wings. According to census and city directory records, the same William Swanney was born in Scotland. It was likely just the innocent manifestation of some old Irish storytelling, but the frequently retold told tale explaining the background of the Swannie name doesn't measure up to the records. Email notifications are only sent once a day, and only if there are new matching items. Send restaurant tips to  and follow @BuffaloFood on Instagram and Twitter. Wiles-Fetterman grew up in Lancaster, one of four children of Marge and Harry “Bill” Fetterman.

There was a small group at the bar with five or six tables available adjacent. We were immediately greeted by our friendly server (also the bartender), and treated to some fine draft beer choices . While the Swanerski of Poland story looks to be a bit of barstool blarney, the record actually shows that the Swanneys of Scotland were the first to operate the tavern that still bears their name. The spelling of Swanney did change to Swannie at some point during the earliest days of the bar being open, which might have evolved and morphed into a story involving Robert Nowak, the Polish-American who owned the bar in the 1940s and '50s. The laminated Toronto Sun story is veteran National Hockey League journalist Mike Zeisberger’s homage to Jim Kelley, the longtime Buffalo News hockey writer who died in 2010, centered around a night at the Swannie House. Among the framed photographs and Buffalo memorabilia hangs an article summoning the memory of a particular night in the bar’s history.

Swannie House Reviews

Nearby Restaurants

Musician Kevin Kukoda started going to Swannie House as a child, brought by his father, along with a gang from the office, for gravy fries, burgers and wings. According to census and city directory records, the same William Swanney was born in Scotland. It was likely just the innocent manifestation of some old Irish storytelling, but the frequently retold told tale explaining the background of the Swannie name doesn't measure up to the records.

Centipedes: Here's Why You Should Never Kill a House Centipede

are house centipedes poisonous

Adult house centipedes have 15 pair of legs with the last pair (on adult females) nearly twice the length of the body, which is one to one and one-half inches in length (Figure 1). This gives the centipede an overall appearance of being from three to four inches in length (including legs and antennae). The legs are banded light and dark, and the body is a dirty yellow with three longitudinal, dark stripes. Centipedes have a uniquely structured first pair of legs, which are used as claws to grasp, penetrate, and inject venom into their prey. Generally, centipede bites appear to have two puncture wounds and look similar to a spider bite.

How Big Are Bed Bugs? The Complete Size Guide

Mice, those elusive yet troublesome creatures, have a knack for infiltrating our living spaces and turning a minor annoyance into a full-blown infestation. Understanding their characteristics and behavior is pivotal in effectively controlling these invaders.... Many people have difficulties telling the difference between centipedes and millipedes since they are fairly similar looking (even their names sound the same).

Pantry Foods That Never Expire

If you have house centipedes, it typically means you have food for the centipedes in your home. They feed on many different insects, like bed bugs, roaches, silverfish, and wasps. However, they are so small that the bite is not likely to break through a person’s skin. House centipedes typically do not try to bite humans because they don’t see humans as a food source. Most bites occur because the person was handling the centipede. As long as you don’t touch it, the centipede is not likely to attack you or try to bite you.

Chemical Control

Maxillipeds enter a victim's tissue and inject venom produced by a gland at their base. Small centipedes' maxillipeds are too weak to penetrate human skin, and their bite typically yields only minor discomfort, similar to that caused by a bee sting. The House Centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata) is a yellowish grey centipede with 15 pairs of legs. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, the species has spread to other parts of the world, where it usually lives in human homes. The House Centipede is an insectivore that kills and eats insects.

Are House Centipedes Venomous?

are house centipedes poisonous

Whether it’s used for hunting or self-defense, the insect will use the venom intentionally. Think of the house centipede using its venom-filled legs to subdue prey. Those who are particularly sensitive might experience worse symptoms. Allergy sufferers may have to seek medical attention if a severe reaction occurs. There is another element to the bite that can cause irritation in those with sensitivities—more on that in a second.

Centipedes: Here's why you should never kill a house centipede

Additionally, these locations are prone to other kinds of bugs, which allows the centipede to have a food source. In addition to being harmless, centipedes actually keep your home clean. This means that they will eat cockroaches, millipedes, termites, and ants around your home.

Solved! Should You Really Kill House Centipedes?

While creepy, centipedes pose little danger to people or a home. There are more than 8,000 centipede species in the world, appearing on every continent except Antarctica. Have you ever seen a many-legged creature scurrying so fast across the ground that you take a second look to make sure you actually saw it? Not only can they provide recommendations regarding treatment, but they can also provide information to help you reduce the likelihood of secondary infection from improper wound care. From appearance to where you might find them, here's everything you need to know about centipedes... Centipedes get into your house through cracks, crevices, and gaps around your doors, pipes, siding, windows, and wiring.

House centipedes won’t harm people or homes.

Centipedes are certainly creepy crawly creatures that can induce a scream or dramatic response. They are not bloodsucking monsters that will feed on you or your family members, and, they don’t feed on wood or fabric like termites and millipedes either. House centipedes are harmless to humans and can be beneficial due to their role in controlling other household pests. Understanding their behavior and taking appropriate precautions can help ensure coexistence with these creatures without any significant concerns for your health or well-being. If you do notice house centipedes inside your home, start by finding out what their food source is. They’re looking for other insects to eat, so if the house centipede is in your home it is a sign there are other insects.

This method saves you the trouble of going on a centipede hunt and timing your “container trap” just right. Of course, if you start experiencing more severe side effects like heart palpitations, you need to seek medical help immediately. You may be experiencing an allergic reaction, which can be incredibly powerful. Because of this, you want to take care when cleaning up out or doing gardening.

are house centipedes poisonous

Their presence often points to further pest problems, as they feed on ants, spiders, and crickets. While centipedes are not dangerous, their fast movements and alarming appearance make many people uneasy. Centipedes are nocturnal creatures that hide in dark, damp, and cool places during the daytime and venture out in the dark to hunt. House centipedes also thrive outdoors and live under logs, rocks, and fallen tree bark. House centipedes have three life stages — egg, larva, and adult.

Using insect screens on doors and windows can also help keep them outdoors. Venom is produced by a gland at the base of the fangs and is administered by maxillipeds on the first body segment. Upon capturing prey, the poison gland is squeezed by the muscles surrounding it and ejects toxins through needle-like ducts. Despite this, the venom usually is not strong enough to be life threatening to people, and most centipede bites are typically more painful for humans than they are dangerous.

House centipedes do not survive winters outdoors in Pennsylvania, but readily reproduce in heated structures. During the summer, they can sometimes be found outdoors in areas near buildings. Just like their outdoor environment, centipedes look for a damp location like a bathroom or basement. If centipedes are in the home, you can reasonably assume there are other critters around, as centipedes find and hunt other types of bugs. Centipedes can have a few dozen pairs of legs to a few hundred, which is how they got their name.

Like all centipedes, these creatures prefer dark and wet, so house centipedes tend to be found in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, or other damp nooks. These types of centipedes grow to about one to one and a half inches in length, and their bodies are black and either yellow or white. Despite their name, they have only 15 pairs of legs but are swift on those legs. This powdered substance made from crushed insect exoskeletons is a very effective remedy for all kinds of indoor pests. The microscopic jagged edges of the powder pierce the body of the house centipedes and also dry out the fat and oils contained inside, slowly killing them. Sprinkle liberally around cracks, door thresholds, and in corners, especially in damp areas.

You definitely don’t want a centipede infestation, but just one centipede can get rid of other bug issues you may have. Reactions to house centipede bites can vary, and not everyone will react the same way. Additionally, while these bites can be uncomfortable, they are typically not a cause for serious concern. Most people find that the symptoms of a house centipede bite subside within a few hours to a day, and they do not require medical treatment. House centipedes are hunters and are always looking for more food. They prefer warmer places that are wet and humid, as this keeps them closer to their food sources.

Not squeamish about killing the centipedes to get rid of them? A variety of sprays, dust, granules, and baits can poison the invaders and control the population. The downside is that sticky traps will kill any creatures unlucky enough to skitter over them and become stuck. Yes, they’re fast, but if you time it right, some container is all it takes to catch a centipede.

While a centipede running across the floor at night can be shocking to see, they are actually beneficial to have in your home if you have other pests. They’re working on killing the other pests in your home, even if you hadn’t realized they were there. Once you do this, the house centipedes will move out and will go somewhere else to find their food. House centipedes originated in the Mediterranean but have spread to be just about anywhere that is warm and humid. They tend to find their way into homes through small cracks that could let other insects in as well and will stay in a home as long as they have a food source. They enter homes to look for other types of insects that can typically be found in homes.

How to Control House Centipedes

are house centipedes poisonous

House centipedes (Scutigera coleoptrata) are distinguished from other centipedes by their longer legs. The longer legs affect the way the common insect moves, creating a sort of "rolling" motion that makes it looks like they have many more legs than they do. Reduction in the centipede food source is the first step in managing a house centipede population. Determine what other types of arthropods, in your house, are providing a meal for the centipedes by distributing 'sticky insect traps', also called monitors, around the house.

Should I kill house centipedes?

To keep house centipedes from entering your home, make sure your home is free from all pests. Standard prevention applies here as it can help you keep all insects and centipedes from getting inside. Make sure your home is sealed, so there are no cracks to let insects in. Keep food and drinks put away and clean up any spills as they occur, so there is no food for other insects. As long as you do not have insects inside your home, the house centipedes will not be in your home. Individuals with other insect allergies should observe their symptoms closely in the event of a centipede bite.

Can House Centipedes Bite Humans Get Rid of Centipedes

If you experience a severe reaction or have concerns about a bite, it is advisable to seek medical attention. However, such cases are relatively rare, and encounters with house centipedes are infrequent in most households. While house centipede venom is adapted for their predatory and defensive needs, it is not considered dangerous to humans. Bites from house centipedes are rare, and the venom typically causes only mild, localized symptoms, such as pain, redness, and swelling, similar to a bee or wasp sting.

How Aggressive Are Common Centipede Species?

Beyond the initial pain caused by an attack, possible side effects include severe swelling, chills, fever and weakness. In the event of a severe allergic reaction, emergency medical services should be contacted immediately. Still, house centipedes are basically harmless to humans, and they're effective predators of other insect nuisances, including roaches, flies, silverfish, and termites. So, if you can learn to not be terrified of them, you should let them do their thing.

House centipedes are considered nuisance pests and when they come into your yard, it is often because they are looking for food. If centipedes find food near your exterior walls, and there are open cracks or crevices, they can accidentally get inside your home. If you are dealing with house centipedes on your property, contact your local exterminators. House centipedes don’t harm or destroy stored products, fabrics, pets, humans, or the structural integrity of your building and are generally only considered a nuisance. All house centipedes are venomous, but they typically run away from humans, and they very rarely bite.

House centipedes won’t harm people or homes.

These crawlers can have anywhere from fifteen to nearly 200 legs (depending on the species and size). Some can get even longer – many centipedes in Hawaii grow to be eight inches long and almost half an inch wide. They can easily climb on floors, walls, and most other surfaces. Beyond this, every once in a while, an outdoor centipede might wander indoors. As we already mentioned, centipedes will only attack if they feel threatened. That means you would have to stumble upon one in a pretty literal sense of that word or find one and decide to harass it to get in trouble.

They are often found in homes, especially in damp areas like basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces. While they can be startling due to their appearance and rapid movements, they are not venomous or harmful to humans. This venom is injected when they bite as a way to subdue their prey so they can eat it. The amount of venom used when a centipede bites is tiny, so it’s not likely to impact a human very much. The biggest worry with a bite, instead, is the pain of the bite, which will go away quickly.

Where Do House Centipedes Live?

ABC pest control exterminators have been helping people throughout the southern states with pest problems for generations. They can deal with your pest problem, no matter what its cause. They are greyish-blue in color—hence their name—and possess both pincers and venomous legs that can cut you. This is an example of a centipede whose “bite” feels more or less like a bee sting. For smaller insects like silverfish (here’s a guide on the difference) and termites, the venom is super potent.

Severe reactions are uncommon, and medical attention is usually not necessary unless there is an allergic response or complications arise. When a house centipede bites someone, they may experience localized pain and redness. The bite is similar to a sting from a bee, though many people report it is not as painful as a bee sting.

House centipedes are attracted to moisture and can be found outside under stones, boards, or sticks or beneath moist leaf litter and other organic matter. When found in homes, house centipedes most often occur in moist cellars, damp closets, and bathrooms, where they feed on insects and spiders. When disturbed, centipedes move quickly toward darkened hiding places. If house centipedes are abundant, there may be an underlying moisture problem in the home that should be corrected.

It’s a good idea to clean the area and apply some antibacterial ointments to prevent any issues. If your symptoms are severe or don’t improve within a few days, talk to your doctor. Pain, redness, and swelling begin immediately upon being bitten.

The most effective way to prevent a centipede infestation is to reduce areas of moisture in and around your home. Remove piles of leaves and grass clippings, logs, stones and rocks on your property. Provide adequate ventilation in basements, attics and crawl spaces.

If you disturb a centipede without realizing it, an attack might result. By using a highly-modified pair of legs called forcipules that work like pincers. Meanwhile, venomous insects will inject their poison into the bloodstream.

Their antennae are sensitive to both smells and tactile information. They use both their mandibles and their legs for holding prey. This way they can deal with several small insects at the same time. To capture prey they either jump onto it or use their legs in a technique described as "lassoing".
